More climate protection, more quality of life: The city of Rastatt has set itself the goal of making the traffic turnaround sustainable. The integrated mobility concept is intended to achieve this. It shows how modes of transport and traffic routes in Rastatt can be distributed among all users in a sensible and ecologically compatible manner. The mobility concept is closely related to the Mobility Pact Rastatt.
What is the difference between mobility concept and mobility pact?
When was the concept development started?
While the Rastatt concept was developed by the city alone with the help of an external planning office, the Mobility Pact is an initiative of twelve partners: the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport (political leadership), the Karlsruhe Regional Council (operational leadership), the city of Rastatt, the Rastatt district, the Mittlerer Oberrhein Regional Association, the Mittelbaden economic region, the Karlsruhe Technology Region, the Karlsruhe Transport Association, the Baden-Württemberg public transport company, Mercedes-Benz, Getinge Holding and Siemens.
How is the development of the mobility concept proceeding?
After recording and analyzing the current situation in the transport sector of the city of Rastatt, strengths and weaknesses were identified and the need for action for the period up to the year 2035 was defined. Specific individual measures were derived from this. The integrated mobility concept is to be adopted by the municipal council at the beginning of 2023.
Will the public also be involved in the process?
Yes, and very intensively. More than 400 suggestions have already been received from the public, more than 190 of which are aimed at improving pedestrian and bicycle traffic alone. Another 480 people from the region took part in an online survey on their mobility behavior. In addition, people were able to enter their own ideas for improving the traffic situation in Rastatt and the region itself in an interactive map.
Which measures have already been implemented in Rastatt?
In the Rastatt city area, the safety of cyclists was increased by additional road markings. In addition, Rastatt took part in the city cycling competition for the first time in 2020 with 29 teams. As a result, seven tons of CO2 were saved. In the city center, traffic light circuits were optimized and a parking guidance system was installed, which reduces parking search traffic and thus reduces the burden on the environment.
With the pop-up bike path, there was a very special action in the summer of 2021. What was behind it?
From July 29 to September 26, the city marked out areas reserved for cyclists on the roadway in both directions in Bahnhofstraße between Bahnhofsvorplatz and Postplatz. The project was accompanied by a so-called Parking Day, during which parking spaces in Bahnhofstraße were creatively converted. On the Kulturplatz, there was a big action day about bicycles with lots of information and hands-on activities.
Was the pop-up bike path well received?
Although the offer did not lead to a significant increase in bicycle traffic on Bahnhofstrasse as had been hoped. However, the designation of the two bike lanes and the resulting reduction of the roadway to one lane in each direction did calm motorized traffic. The number of speeding cars was reduced by 25 percent due to the pop-up bike lane. This had a positive effect on the noise perception of the residents.
How have motorists responded to the pop-up bike path?
What has happened in the region in terms of mobility?
The latest measure of the Mobility Pact was launched in December 2022. Since then, bus line 231 of the Rastatt transport company has been running every hour from the Rastatt train station via Wintersdorf to Soufflenheim and Seltz. This can be done very conveniently with a single KVV ticket for Wabe 361. A ticket for the Alsatian transport network Fluo 67, in turn, entitles the holder to travel as far as Rastatt.
The cross-border bus line is a test offer initially limited to three years. The costs are shared on the German side by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Transport, the district of Rastatt, the city of Rastatt and Mercedes-Benz, and on the French side by the Région Grand Est, the Collectivité Européenne d'Alsace, the special-purpose associations Pays Rhénan and Communauté de Communes de la Plaine du Rhin, and the Roppenheim The Style Outlets shopping center.
Which projects from the Mobility Pact have been implemented?
A so-called regiomove port was set up at the Rastatt train station at the beginning of 2022. There, travelers can choose between different means of transportation and change them conveniently. They can also find out about car-sharing offers and bicycle parking. There are lockers for smaller pieces of luggage, rain pants or bicycle helmets. A central digital terminal on the station forecourt provides an overview of routes, local mobility offers and inner-city destinations. In combination with the regiomove app, trips can be booked directly at the terminal. There are seven such regiomove ports in the Karlsruhe transport network.
Are there any other measures that have already been implemented?
The existing Regiobus line X34 from Rastatt station to Baden Airpark was already extended to Bühl station in December 2020. In addition, employees of the Mercedes-Benz plant in Rastatt can now cycle directly to the site, where 200 new parking spaces have been created. The Getinge company, in turn, allows its workforce to lease e-bikes. In addition, employees in the Getinge administration can work in their home offices for up to three days. This also reduces the burden on roads, buses and trains, and the environment. Work is also proceeding at full speed on the realization of the planned Karlsruhe-Rastatt high-speed cycle route.
